Student engagement is a key predictor of academic success and closely linked to outcomes such as attendance and behavior. As understanding of engagement evolves, measurement tools must be grounded in strong theoretical frameworks. This study evaluates the student engagement domain of the MI Student Voice Perception Survey, which includes 12 items organized around five engagement accelerators.
The present study aimed to (1) highlight the methodological challenges endemic to self-report survey research in populations with intellectual disability, and (2) expand this area of research by investigating the psychometric properties of three measures (social-emotional learning, student engagement, and belonging) in a sample of cognitively impaired students.
Surveys in educational settings offer critical insights into the perceptions and experiences of students, parents, and teachers. When these surveys include anchor (common) questions across multiple surveys, they present a unique opportunity to triangulate data.
A macro-analysis of the Spring 2023 results suggested that, on average, students struggled most in the domain of social-emotional learning and least with student engagement. Should district-wide changes be made based on these results in assumption that this is representative of the whole student population? ...disaggregation of data is vital when making these decisions to ensure that all student voices are being heard.
